Special Education Referral Unit (SERF) Teaching Assistant L3

Salary:                                                 Points 26-30 on the NJC Pay Scale currently £23,398-£26,822(FTE)

Contract:                                             Permanent, 32hrs per week, Term time only plus 5 days

Mereside Primary School is seeking to appoint a Teaching Assistant for the Pathways Special Educational Referral Facility (SERF) situated in Mereside School. Children with Social, Emotional and Mental Health Difficulties from other Blackpool primary schools are referred to the SERF, and spend up to four days a week in Pathways and one day a week in their ‘home’ school. The post holder will be committed to ensuring the children who access the SERF provision are supported to have a positive learning experience both in the SERF and in their own school.

The two Teaching Assistants in the SERF work under the direction and instruction of the SERF Teacher, and are required to act as a keyworker for up to three children each. In addition to supporting their learning in the SERF, the post holder will be required to visit the children in their home school and provide advice and guidance to class teachers on strategies for behaviour management. We are therefore looking for an individual with good communication skills with both adults and children, and a positive and caring attitude.

Candidates must be willing to undertake training in de-escalation and positive handling techniques. A comprehensive training programme will be provided but significant experience of working with children with challenging behaviour is essential.
